Just like humans, our pets benefit greatly from regular dental care.
Oral hygiene is extremely important for their overall health. Without proper care, dental disease can lead to infections and even damage internal organs.
Teach your pet to love having their teeth brushed
Start by letting your pet taste the toothpaste. Try putting a small amount on your fingertip to let them sniff it.
Use positive reinforcement while lifting the gums, letting them lick the toothpaste off your fingertip.
Gradually, as your pet allows, move your finger alongside their teeth on both sides of the mouth.
Steadily build up to a few times a week, eventually using a brush.
Why at-home dental care matters
Short-term effects of neglecting your pet’s dental health include plaque and tartar buildup, while long-term neglect can lead to gingivitis and periodontal disease. These conditions are not only painful but can also cause other health complications if untreated.
Routine at-home care, such as tooth brushing, water additives, and dental chews, can help prevent the need for extensive dental procedures later in life.
When to see a vet
If your pet is avoiding food, has persistent bad breath, or bleeding gums, it’s time to visit your vet.
During a consultation, the vet will examine your pet’s mouth and may recommend a professional dental cleaning under anaesthesia to address any underlying issues.
We have some great products available that can help maintain a solid dental routine at home, keeping your pet’s teeth clean and breath fresh. These include:
Veggiedent® FR3SH™ are low-calorie, meat-free dental chews that help scrape away tartar from teeth – and freshen breath! They're very palatable, dogs love the taste, and they won’t cause broken teeth, cut gums, or constipation.
Virbac's C.E.T.® Dental Range includes toothpaste formulated with ingredients that slow plaque formation. It comes in malt or poultry flavour, is highly palatable, and safe to swallow. The range also features toothbrushes with soft bristles and a tapered head, or a convenient finger brush that can make brushing easier.
Aquadent® FR3SH™ is a water additive that helps combat bad breath and maintain oral health. It also includes a prebiotic to support digestion.
Teef is another water additive, containing both pre- and post-biotics. Its ingredients help inhibit harmful bacterial growth, leaving your pet with fresher breath and better oral health. Unlike Aquadent, Teef is tasteless and odourless – perfect for fussy pets.
